MAURICE JARRE:

CROSSED SWORDS (Warner Brothers BSK 3161)  (SW) (CO)

RYAN’S DAUGHTER (This is a mint DJ copy of the Maurice Jarre soundtrack from the 1970 David Lean picture starring Robert Mitchum and Trevor Howard.  MGM Records ISE-27 ST (stereo) still has the shrink-wrap on the fold-open cover, and the record was only played once to record it.  Best yet, this is a special yellow-labeled “M-G-M Special Disc Jockey Record,” so you get more than just the “DJ” sticker on the cover to show it’s a promo!)

LAURIE JOHNSON:

FIRST MEN IN THE MOON [Wonderful compilation album of music from Johnson-scored films, including Ray Harryhausen’s FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, SR. STRANGELOVE, CAPTAIN KRONOS, VAMPIRE HUNTER, and HEDDA.  Johnson conducts the London Studio Symphony Orchestra.  Starlog/Varese Sarabande SV-95002 (D).]  (SW)

QUINCY JONES:

THE COLOR PURPLE:  INTERVIEW WITH QUINCY JONES  [Here’s a very rare 1986 release from the classic film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Alice Walker.  It’s a 26-minute interview with composer Quincy Jones, who scored the film.  Side A contains only the interview, while Side B contains the same interview accompanied by music from the soundtrack.  It’s a fabulous look into the music of this memorable film!  1986 Qwest Records WBMS 135-1 is a white-labeled promo, and is in excellent condition.  It has some marks that appear to be minor scuffs from the sleeve, but it plays mostly silently and without wear.  Don’t miss this rarity, you Quincy Jones fans!]

FOR LOVE OF IVY  [I am NOT an expert on “blaxploitation,” and in fact I don’t know exactly what makes one film with a black star or perspective “blaxploitation” while another film isn’t. But based on some of these cue titles (“Little Hippy Dippy,” “Soul Motion,” “Wheelin’ And Dealin’,” “Black Pearl”) I would guess that this album qualifies as SOME kind of “sploitation!” The film starred Sidney Poitier, BeauBridges, Abbey Lincoln, and Carroll O’Connor, and the music is by Quincy Jones, with some guitar and vocal work by B. B. King, some lyrics by Maya Angelou (Angelousploitation?), and a vocal from Shirley Horn.

This ABC Records release (ABCS-OC-7) has a great-looking near-mint cover from the front, with the back having a small fold, some minor fading (barely noticeable), and red marker highlighting three tracks.  This was usually done by a PR firm to tell a radio station which songs to listen to for airplay, and since they’re all based on the tune “For Love Of Ivy,” that seems to be the case here.  All seams are really solid.  The album doesn’t appear to have ever been played,  being in mint condition, another sign that it was a copy at a radio station!]

IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT  [QUINCY JONES/RAY CHARLES.  Does this qualify as Blaxploitation?  I don’t know, but even if it doesn’t, that doesn’t mean it isn’t GOOD!  And this soundtrack album is GREAT!  Quincy Jones composed and conducted the score for this classic film starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger, and Ray Charles sings the title song as well as plays piano solo on another cue.  Glen Campbell sings “Bowlegged Polly,” which was NOT his follow-up single to one of his Jimmy Webb songs.  Glen also plays banjo, and Ray Brown plays bass.  Billy Preston is there on organ, and Roland Kirk, the blind flautist from Chicago is there as well!  Stereo UAS 5160 is in near-mint condition, although the vinyl has some weird-looking psychedelic patterns in it.  Maybe it’s been blaxploitated?  Whatever the case, the vinyl is as quiet as you could hope for.  Striking cover is excellent to near-mint, with some shading on the back due to aging, but not much.  Don’t miss out on this classic!]

MICHAEL KAMEN:

LETHAL WEAPON [No, this isn’t the score from any of the sequels, but rather is the original motion picture soundtrack from the original film starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.  Contains the song “Lethal Weapon,” performed by Honeymoon Suite and composed by Kamen and Eric Clapton.  Other music performed by Kamen, Clapton, David Sanborn, and others.  Promo stamp on front cover.  Near-mint all around.]

VAN MCCOY:

A WOMAN CALLED MOSES  [BLAXPLOITATIONESQUE.  I’ll be honest with you – I have no idea what makes something “blaxploitation” and what doesn’t.  So I’ve coined the word “blaxploitationesque” so I can cover all my bases.  This 1978 soundtrack album features music written by Van McCoy, and that’s got to be good, right?  A lot of it sounds like “The Hustle,” with its disco-flavored funkyness.  Tommie Young sings the songs that help explore the life of Harriet Ross Tubman.  MCA Records 3054 contains seven McCoy themes from the picture, and it’s in near-mint condition.  The cover in VG+, although mostof the spine is cracked through.  Cover image is excellent, though.  Album has a cut corner and sample sticker on back.]

NOVECENTO:  TBL1-1221 is the 1976 Spanish release of Ennio Morricone’s score for NOVECENTO, on the orange RCA label.  Film starred Robert DeNiro and Gerard Depardieu.  It’s a superb score, and vinyl is near-mint and very quiet. Cover has the tiniest of ring wear, and is excellent to near-mint.  Stereo and wonderful!

LADY CHATTERLEY’S LOVER  [Same as above, only a German version, Ultra Phone 6.25041 AS.  Same topless beauty!]  (SEALED)

RIZ ORTOLANI:

AFRICA ADDIO  [United Artists UAS 5141 is the stereo version of this great score by Ortolani, from the 1967 film.  Jimmy Roselli sings the title song “Who Can Say,” hoping for another “More,” but it’s the underscore that is what’s good about this release. It goes from spaghetti western to sword-and-sandal-sounding cues, with everything in between.  Album is in near-mint condition, and cover is excellent, with all seams intact.  On the black (with colored balls) United Artists’ label, and a terrific pressing!]

BUONA SERA, MRS. CAMPBELL  [United Artists UAS-5192 is in near-mint condition.  Cover is VG+, with split seam on bottom.]

ECCO  [Warner Brothers 1600 (stereo) features the lovely gold WB label.  Riz Ortolani concocts a swinging score of Italian lounge and dance music that’ll have you moving every part of your body in a million which ways!  The composer of “More” has definitely outdone himself with this treasure, which has never seen the light of day on CD.  Some drying and splitting of the seams, but the record is in near-mint condition.  By the way, “Ecco” means “behold” in Italian.]

Album is in near-mint condition, and the cover is VG - VG+, with mild ringwear and some minor chipping along a few seams, which are very thick and solid.  By the way, “Ecco” means “behold” in Italian.  This copy has a tiny hole punch in it.]  (CO)

MADRON  (Quad Records QUS 5001 ST)  (SW)

WOMEN OF THE WORLD  [It’s jazzy! It’s twisty!  It’s bluesy!  It’s music that portrays ladies from all over the world and from all walks of life! This fun album features a score by Riz Ortolani and Nino Oliviero.  Decca DL 9112 is in near-mint to mint condition, and the cover is in excellent condition, with a small seam-split on the bottom that was taped.]

ALAN PARKER:

JAWS 3-D  [RARE SCORE FROM BOX-OFFICE DISASTER!  Jaws:  John Williams.  Jaws 2: John Williams.  Jaws 3-D:  Alan Parker? That’s right.  And although this film was a disaster, and deservedly so, this is a wonderfully exciting score that unfortunately died a premature death along with the film.  Although John Williams’ famous JAWS motif is arranged by Parker, the vast majority of the score is entirely original.  And it’s no slacker!  You will be pleased!  MCA-6124 is in excellent to near-mint condition.  Typically ugly-looking vinyl from MCA, but a pretty quiet pressing. Gold stamp on the cover.]

CLIFTON PARKER:

LADYHAWKE  (Atlantic 81248-1-E) (CO)

ANDRE PREVIN:

GOODBYE CHARLIE:  20th Century-Fox TFM 3165 is the original soundtrack album from the simply awful Dony Curtis/Debbie Reynolds/Pat Boone/Walter Matthau travesty of 1964.  The music, however, is entirely a different matter.  Great stylish score with just about everything in it by Andre Previn, and it’s a real joy to listen to.  This is the monaural edition, and it’s in excellent to near-mint condition.  Cover is excellent to near-mint, and seams are all solid.  Fun all the way!
