PAUL SMITH:

THE LIVING DESERT  [“Desert Suite” is a five-inch reel-to-reel quarter-inch tape that came in a Scotch magnetic Tape box, but which has a special wrap-around label on it stating:  “Desert Suite -- selections from Walt Disney’s THE LIVING DESERT -- First feature length Tru-Life Adventure.”  There is more information on it about composer Smith, and the narration is printed on the back of the label along with information about the instrumentation.  The dialogue does NOT intrude on the music selections with the exception of the opening description of the music that will follow in the suite.  Tape plays flawlessly and sounds excellent.]

TRUE-LIFE ADVENTURES  [Rare Disneyland WDL-4011 is in fair condition.  Cover VG with small sticker residue on back.  Superb Paul Smith music from “Beaver Valley,” “Bear Country,” “Prowlers of the Everglades,” “Nature’s Half Acre,” and “Olympic Elk.”]

MISCHA SPOLIANSKY:

SAINT JOAN [If you're not familiar with this super score, you will probably be pleasantly surprised.  Spoliansky's most famous film work is very expensive and rare in its original domestic incarnation.  Here's a super-sounding UK Reissue Capitol LCT 6134 that's in mint condition!]

MAX STEINER:

ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN [TT/MS/11.  Original music tracks produced by Tony Thomas.  41 minutes long.]

THE LITTLE MINISTER  [Original music tracks from the 1934 film.  Cinema Records LP 8016.]

LOVERS MUST LEARN  [Original Japanese release of ROME ADVENTURE (Warner Brothers B-1004) from 1962.  ON RED VINYL!  Cover is similar to domestic release, only with alternate film title and Japanese credits on back of album.  Monaural album is in VG to VG+ condition.  Recording sounds hissier than U. S. master, either due to special vinyl or different recording source used for mastering.  Cover is in excellent condition, with typically solid Japanese packaging!]

HARRY SUKMAN:

AROUND THE WORLD UNDER THE SEA [Monument SLP 18050 stereo is in fair condition and should only be used to hear the score, not to enjoy it!]

TAJ MAHAL:

BROTHERS  [Blaxploitation score from 1977 film starring Bernie Casey and Ron O’Neal, in tale about “a notorious, beautiful, radical, black professor” and “a black man in a white man’s prison.”  It was a true story, so that should be reason enough to want this soundtrack album. Other reasons are the names of some of the cues:  “Funky Butt,” “Brother’s Doin’ Time,” “Free the Brothers,” and “Malcolm’s Song.” There’s some slow, jazzy, funky, steel drummy music, and lots of moody pieces that are perfect for the story of a notorious, beautiful, radical, black professor and a black man in a white man’s prison.  Album is in VG+ condition, with a few clicks here and there, but little wear.  Cover is excellent, with only a corner bend to mar it.  Stay out of the white man’s prison and enjoy this album!]

DIMITRI TIOMKIN:

CIRCUS WORLD  [Rousing score in stereo.  MGM SE-4252 ST is in near-mint condition.]

THE FILM MUSIC OF DIMITRI TIOMKIN [Unicorn-Kanchana DKP 9047 features Sir David Willcocks conducting the Royal College of Music Orchestra.  Includes world-premiere re-recording of “RHAPSODY OF STEEL.”  Also features music from THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, THE GUNS OF NAVARONE, WILD IS THE WIND, and western compilation “A PRESIDENT’S COUNTRY.]  (SW)

THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA  [French release of this classic Tiomkin score.  CBS 83123]  (SW)

SEARCH FOR PARADISE [Original RCA LOC-1034 is in excellent condition.  Cover has some discoloration on the back, but the rest is excellent as well.  Really nice copy of a fabulous score.]

A TRIBUTE TO JAMES DEAN  [Columbia Special Products ACL-940.  Music conducted by Ray Heindorf.  Contains Rosenman’s music from EAST OF EDEN and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE and Dimitri Tiomkin’s music from GIANT.]  (SW)

WILD IS THE WIND  [French rerelease CBS 83124 of score from Anthony Quinn/Anna Magnani film.  Title song sung by Johnny Mathis.]

DIANE WARREN:

ARMAGEDDON  PROMOTIONAL compact disc  [“For Your Consideration” “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” performed by Aerosmith.]

JIMMY WEBB:

VOICES  [This was a 1979 M-G-M film starring Amy Irving and Michael Ontkean, and it featured an original score by the great songwriter Jimmy Webb.  This album contains both songs and score by Webb, with the exception of two songs, one of which, “Anything That’s Rock ‘N’ Roll” was written by Tom Petty and performed by Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Also featured on the album is “I Will Always Wait For You,” On a Stage,” and “Drunk As a Punk” sung by Burton Cummings (ex-Guess Who), and “Bubbles In My Beer” sung by Willie Nelson.  See, there are about a dozen reasons to win this fabulous album! Album was only played once to record it, and is in mint condition.  So is cover, which is shrink-wrapped, and only marred by promo hole punch.]

VOICES  [Same as above, only SEALED.]

DAVID WHITAKER:

RUN WILD, RUN FREE [SGC Stereo SD-5003.]  (VG++/M)  (PROMO)

JOHN WILLIAMS:

JAWS 2  [MCA-3045]  (SEALED)  (CO)

JAWS 2  [MCA-3045]  (SW)  (CO)

THE STAR WARS TRILOGY [Compact disc -- Varese Sarabande VCD-47201, 1983.  Varujan Kojian and The Utah Symphony Orchetra.]  (PROMO)  (CO)

TOM SAWYER  (This is an album missing from most John Williams collections.  Williams adapted and conducted the music for this musical adaptation of Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer back in 1973.  Music and lyrics are by Richard and Robert Sherman.  United Artists stereo release is in mint condition, as is the cover, which is still shrink-wrapped!)

VARIOUS:

ACTION JACKSON  [I am NOT an expert on “blaxploitation,” and in fact I don’t know exactly what makes one film with a black star or perspective “blaxploitation” while another film isn’t. But based on the photos showing Carol Weathers looking like some sort of super-spy action hero, not to mention the sensual pose of Vanity, if that’s indeed Vanity on the cover, I think this should probably qualify as blaxploitation.  Or at least badsploitation.  The soundtrack album (Lorimar Records 90886) contains songs performed by The Pointer Sisters, Madame X, Levert, Vanity, Sister Sledge, David Koz, Kareem, Skyy, and M. C. Jam and Pee Wee Jam.  One song was composed and performed by Herbie Hancock and Michael Kamen.   The album cover is in excellent condition, with a few smudges, one from a price label. The album appears unplayed and in mint condition.]

BERNARD HERRMANN CONDUCTS GREAT BRITISH FILM SCORES  [Outstanding re-recordings with Herrmann leading the National Philharmonic Orchestra in performances from ANNA KARENINA (Constant Lambert), OLIVER TWIST (Arnold Bax), THE IDEAL HUSBAND (Arthur Benjamin), ESCAPE ME NEVER (William Walton), 49TH PARALLEL (Ralph Vaughan Williams), and THINGS TO COME (Arthur Bliss).  London SPC 21149 Phase 4 Stereo.]  (SW)]

BONANZA:  PONDEROSA PARTY TIME  [Although not technically a soundtrack album, I originally bought this 1962 release thinking it was the just-as-rare BONANZA soundtrack album, seeing as the covers are awfully similar.  What it turned out to be is an album full of musical performances by Dan Blocker (Hoss), Michael Landon (Little Joe), Lorne Greene (Ben), and Pernell Roberts (Adam).  They sing folk songs, they joke around, and it’s a hell of a lot more fun than you’d have any right to expect.  In fact, some of the singing is darn good (well, maybe not Little Joe’s...).  RCA LSP-2583 is in stereo and VG++ condition. A few clicks and pops to be heard, but because of the laid-back nature of the recording, you don’t really notice anything except the “good times!”  Cover has some minor crinkling, and colored slick is rubbed off the top edge, but no seam splits.  Virtually no wear on the front at all, and very minor wear to the back.]

CLASSIC BRITISH FILM SCORES, VOL. 1  [Ariel Records CBF 13.  Archival recordings with music from CONQUEST OF THE AIR (Bliss), THE LOVES OF JOANNA GODDEN (Vaughan Williams), NICHOLAS NICKLEBY (Lord Berners), THE RAKE’S PROGRESS (Alwyn), OLIVER TWIST (Bax), and “SOUND BARRIER Rhapsody” (Arnold).]  (SW)

AN EVENING WITH MIKE NICHOLS AND ELAINE MAY [Mercury OCM-2200.  Fold-open cover.  Highlights from the Broadway production.  On black Mercury label.]

THE FEMALE PRISONER  [Columbia OS-3320 features Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, and Luciano Berio conducting selections from the film, including Webern’s “Five Pieces For Orchestra,” Mahler’s “Third Movement” from “Symphony No. 4 in G Major,” and Berio’s “Visage” for magnetic tape and electronic sounds.]

THE GREAT GATSBY  [Paramount two-record set PAS 2-3001) features music from the Robert Redford/Mia Farrow film, with the score supervised and conducted by Nelson Riddle.  Music by Berlin, Riddle, Kahn, and others.   SEALED COPY!]

HERE’S JOHNNY: “MAGIC MOMENTS FROM THE TONIGHT SHOW”  [2-LP Casablanca gatefold release SPNB-1296 contains excerpts featuring Bette Midler, Groucho Marx, George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Richard Nixon, Doc Severinsen and His Sweetheart Band, Peter Falk, Jack Webb, Ike and Tina Turner, Art Fern and the Teatime Movies, Ed McMahon, Johnny Carson, Dean Martin, Buddy Hackett, Jack Benny, George Burns, Jerry Lewis, Glen Campbell, Don Rickles, Sammy Davis, and many more!  SEALED]

JEAN HARLOW FILMS (Great Motion Picture Themes From...) [World Artists WAS-3007 features selections from SARATOGA, CHINA SEAS, DINNER AT EIGHT, THE GIRL FROM MISSOURI, RECKLESS, PERSTONAL PROPERTY, HOLD YOUR MAN, SUZY, and more.  Music composed by Franz Waxman, Arthur Freed & Nacio Herb Brown, Gus Kahn & Walter Donaldson, Joseph Young, Ned Washington, and Victor Young, Dorothy Fields & Jimmy McHugh, Perry Botkin, Jr., etc.  Also also contains “Jean’s Theme.”]  (VG-/M-)

MISTER MAGOO PRESENTS MUSIC TO SELL BULBS BY [Promotional album for General Electric, released by Columbia Special Products.  CSP 165 features a fold-open cover with images of Mister Magoo, and the album contains songs performed by Vic Damone, Patti Page, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Jo Stafford, Andre Previn, Andre Kostelanetz, Mitch Miller and The Gang, The Norman Luboff Choir, and others. ]

MOTHER, JUGS & SPEED  [Blaxploitation, Jugsploitation, Etc.sploitation.  I am NOT an expert on “blaxploitation,” and in fact I don’t know exactly what makes one film with a black star or perspective “blaxploitation” while another film isn’t. And I sincerely doubt that a Bill Cosby film would necessarily qualify, but there is music on the soundtrack album (A & M Records SP-4590) by Billy Preston, The Brothers Johnson, and The Crusaders.  Of course, there are also songs by Peter Frampton, Steve Marriott, and Michelle Phillips, and the film also stars Larry Hagman and Dick Butkus, so maybe it’s more like “white-and-blaxploitation?”  Or maybe it’s just “jugsploitation,” with Raquel Welch starring in the picture?  Album is a promotional copy with a sticker and hole punch.  Cover is excellent, with some scratched-off credits along the spine. Album is a white-labeled promo that is in near-mint condition.]

MURDER AND MAYHEM:  Great Horror Scores from Hollywood’s Golden Age [Marco Polo 8.225132 contains great re-recordings of Max Steiner’s THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS, Hugo Friedhofer’s THE LODGER, and Victor Young’s THE UNINVITED.]  (PROMO) (SEALED)

MUSIC FROM ALFRED HITCHCOCK FILMS  [Varese 704.250 offers fabulous re-recordings with Charles Ketcham leading The Utah Symphony Orchestra in music from John Williams’ FAMILY PLOT, Dimitri Tiomkin’s STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, Franz Waxman’s SUSPICION, and Roy Webb’s NOTORIOUS. Album is SEALED!]  [ALSO HAVE (SW) COPY]

MUSIC FROM FILMS FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA [Angel SZ-37757 presents Kenneth Alwyn conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in performances of “Warsaw Concerto,” “Rhapsody In Blue,” “Cornish Rhapsody,” “Spellbound Concerto,” and “The Dream of Olwen.”  Daniel Adni, pianist.]  (SW)

NIGHT OF THE IGUANA [Limited Collectors’ Edition features dramatic highlights from the film with commentary by John Huston.  Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, and Deborah Kerr starr in the cinematic version of Tennessee Williams’ play.  MGM promotional record (PR-4)  is in excellent condition and has a fold-open cover.]

ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS AND RECORDINGS OF ORIGINAL MUSIC FROM GREAT MOVIES [One of the longest titles on any soundtrack album, this two-record set from MGM (stereo 2SE-10) is a limited-edition release, and contains music from MADAME BOVARY, BUTTERFIELD 8, CIMARRON, FAREWELL TO ARMS, BEN HUR, LILI, QUO VADIS, EL CID, MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, THE V.I.P.s, THE ROBE, LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING, CLEOPATRA, and HOW THE WEST WAS WON.  Taped seam-split on bottom.]  (M-/EX)

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN  [This is the rare 2-LP version of the Steve Martin/Bernadette Peters musical picture.  Features performances by Fred Astaire, Ronnie Hill & Promo Scala’s Accordion Band, Helen Kane, Bing Crosby, The Boswell Sisters, Rudy Vallee, Elsie Carlisle with Ambrose and His Orchestra, and others, with arrangements by Billy May, Marvin Hamlisch, and others.  Gatefold cover with extra picture galleries inside.  This is a promotional copy with a stamp and sticker on the front cover.  Near-mint to mint all around.]

ROADIE [2-LP “song score” featuring Cheap Trick, Pat Benatar, Alice Cooper, Teddy Pendergrass, Eddie Rabbitt, Styx, Blondie, Roy Orbison, Emmylou Harris, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank William, Jr., and more.  Warner Brothers 2HS-3441.]  (PROMO)

SAMUEL GOLDWYN PROMOTIONAL ALBUM!  [Here is a rare item, or at least this is the only copy of it I've ever seen.  It is a 1974 gate-fold album (Record #GNP2222) on the "Samuel Goldwyn Presents" label, or something like that!  The album is called "Samuel Goldwyn Presents," and it features lengthy selections from GUYS AND DOLLS, featuring Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, and others, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, featuring Danny Kaye and Jeanmaire, OF LOVE, ETCETERA, featuring Dinah Shore, Martha Mears, and Eddie Cantor, PORGY AND BESS, featuring Sidney Poitier, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Diahann Carroll, and THEY SHALL HAVE MUSIC, featuring Jascha Heifetz.  Artwork from THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, THE BISHOP'S WIFE, DEAD END, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, LITTLE FOXES, and other films adorns the album cover.  Album is in VG++ condition.  It has some marks, but plays extremely well.  Cover is in excellent condition, with some discoloration at the edges due to age.]

SCROOGED  [A & M SP 3921.  Various artists, including Annie Lennox & Al Green, Dan Hartman & Denise Lopez, Robbie Robertson, Natalie Cole, and Buster Poindexter.]  (SEALED)

SPACEBALLS [From the 1987 Mel Brooks film starring John Candy and Rick Moranis, soundtrack contains music by Morris as well as songs by Van Halen, Ladyfire, The Pointer Sisters, The Spinners, Kim Carnes & Jeffrey Osborne, and Berlin.]  (M-/VG+) (CO)

SPAGHETTI WESTERNS, VOLUME TWO [2-CD DRG SET with 63 tracks by Ennio Morricone, Carlo Savina, Luis Bacalov, Riz Ortolani, Francesco De Masi, and others.]  (SEALED)

SUSPENSE  [Nostaliga Lane 1022 contains two radio shows from 1942:  “House in Cypress Canyon” starring Robert Taylor and “Fugue in C Minor” starring Vincent Price and Ida Lupino.  In near-mint condition.  (SW)]

TWO A PENNY  [Holland reissue of Cliff Richard soundtrack album, with 14 tracks, including title tune, “I’ll Love You Forever Today,” “Rattler,” and “Cloudy.”  EMI 054-06964 is in near-mint condition, as in the cover.]

WAGON TRAIN  [VARIOUS ARTISTS.  People either love or hate this album, which has 13 tracks from the TV series conducted by Stanley Wilson.  I think it’s a fabulous listening experience – one of the best TV soundtracks of the era.  Unfortunately, Mercury SR 60179 has seen better days.  The album was played a lot and has a number of scratches and wear, so purchase this only to see if you like the recording before you shell out big bucks for a near-mint copy.   The cover, however, is in excellent, solid condition, so you might want it for that. Some edge and corner dinging, but main photo cover is gorgeous and seams are solid, with some minor cracking on the top seam.]

A WEDDING  [Here is a terrific souvenir from Robert Altman's 1978 film A WEDDING, starring Carol Burnett, Geraldine Chaplin, Mia Farrow, Lillian Gish, Vittorio Gassman, and many others.  This promotional release was produced by the PR company Steve Strout & Associates for this Lions Gate Films Production/20th Century Fox release, and it contains a "Featurette" with Carol Burnett, as well as a radio script so that you can appear to be interviewing Carol!  As if that weren't enough, you also get 5 high quality stills featuring Carol Burnett!  An incredible package that should be a part of every fan of A WEDDING, assuming there ARE fans out there for that particular picture.  If not, I KNOW there are Carol Burnett fans out there, and this is an item surely missing from many a Burnett-collector's collection.  Everything is in near-mint or better condition.  The only thing not perfect is the label, which, while it's in perfect condition, does not accurately reflect what's on the album, as it says there are "celebrity quotes," which are not on there.  Apparently this promotional company did a lousy job of quality control, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're not in existence any more.  Regardless, that does NOT reflect the rarity of this item!]
